Health and Safety Policy for Storage Isle of Dogs
Storage Isle of Dogs is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for customers, visitors, contractors, and employees. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risk in our storage facilities and during any associated removal and handling activities, so that everyone using our services can do so confidently and safely.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary health and safety objectives are to prevent accidents, protect property, and minimise risks to people, equipment, and stored goods. We aim to maintain high standards of safety performance by planning our activities carefully, assessing potential hazards in storage and removals operations, and responding quickly to any issues that arise.
Health and safety is an integral part of how we operate. We continually review our procedures and practices to ensure that they remain effective, appropriate to our services, and in line with current regulations and industry guidance.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Storage Isle of Dogs holds overall responsibility for implementing this Health and Safety Policy. This includes ensuring that adequate resources, training, and supervision are provided to support safe storage and removal services.
Management duties include:
Ensuring that all staff are aware of health and safety procedures relevant to their roles. Conducting and reviewing risk assessments for storage units, common areas, loading bays, and associated handling activities. Providing and maintaining appropriate equipment, such as trolleys and lifting aids, in safe working condition. Monitoring health and safety performance and investigating incidents or near misses so that lessons can be learned and improvements made.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee has a responsibility to work safely, follow company procedures, and take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. This includes colleagues, customers, visitors, and contractors.
Employees must:
Follow safe systems of work and manual handling guidelines when moving customers possessions. Use lifting aids and equipment correctly and report any defects immediately. Keep walkways, fire exits, and access routes clear of obstructions. Wear any personal protective equipment provided for specific tasks and areas. Report accidents, incidents, hazards, or unsafe conditions to management without delay.
Customer Responsibilities
We expect customers to act responsibly while using our storage facilities and when engaging our associated removal services. This cooperation is essential for maintaining a safe environment for everyone on site.
Customers are required to:
Follow all safety signs and instructions given by staff. Use equipment such as trolleys and lifts in a careful and appropriate manner. Ensure that items brought for storage are safe and not prohibited or hazardous. Pack and stack goods securely to avoid collapse, spills, or injury when accessing stored items. Refrain from blocking corridors, loading areas, or fire exits with vehicles or goods.
Safe Storage and Handling Practices
We promote safe storage practices to reduce the risk of accidents or damage to property. Customers and staff should stack heavier items at the bottom, use stable shelving where available, and avoid overloading boxes or units.
During any handling or removal activities, staff are trained to use correct lifting techniques, work in teams where necessary, and plan the route of movement to avoid trip hazards and congestion. We encourage customers arranging removals or large deliveries to inform us of any special requirements so that we can manage access, loading, and offloading safely.
Risk Assessment and Hazard Control
We conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential hazards associated with storage, access, parking, loading bays, and handling of goods. These assessments help us determine what measures are necessary to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Examples of controls we may use include clear signage, designated parking and loading areas, limits on unit contents where appropriate, and restrictions on hazardous or illegal items. We also maintain good housekeeping standards in common areas, ensuring that floors are kept as clear and dry as reasonably practicable.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
Fire safety is a critical part of our health and safety management. Our premises are equipped with appropriate fire detection and firefighting equipment, which is inspected and maintained regularly.
Emergency procedures are in place and include clearly marked escape routes, fire exit signage, and assembly points. Staff are trained to assist with safe evacuation, and customers and visitors must follow all instructions during an emergency. Fire doors and exits must never be obstructed, and items must not be stored in corridors or stairwells.
Prohibited and Restricted Items
To protect people and property, certain items must not be stored in our units or handled as part of our services. These may include flammable or explosive substances, pressurised containers, perishable foods, live animals, and any illegal or unsafe goods.
Customers are responsible for ensuring that the goods they bring to our site are suitable for storage and compliant with our terms and conditions. If we identify dangerous or prohibited items, we may take steps to isolate or remove them and will cooperate with relevant authorities where necessary.
Training, Information, and Supervision
We provide appropriate training and information to all employees so that they understand their health and safety responsibilities and can perform their roles safely. This includes induction training for new staff and periodic refresher training covering topics such as manual handling, emergency procedures, and safe use of equipment.
Supervisors are responsible for monitoring work practices, particularly during higher risk activities such as complex removals, heavy lifting, and use of specialist equipment. They are encouraged to take a proactive approach to identifying training needs and promoting a positive safety culture.
Accident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, incidents, and near misses on our premises, or arising from our removal activities, must be reported to management as soon as possible. Accurate reporting allows us to investigate what happened, understand the causes, and take action to prevent recurrence.
We maintain records of incidents in accordance with regulatory requirements and use this information to review our risk assessments and working practices. Where necessary, we will communicate changes to staff and customers to enhance safety.
Continuous Improvement and Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, facilities, or applicable regulations. We welcome feedback from staff, customers, and contractors on any aspect of health and safety and consider such feedback when planning improvements.
By working together and following the principles in this policy, Storage Isle of Dogs aims to provide a safe, efficient, and reliable service for storage and related removal activities, protecting people, property, and possessions at every stage.
